The BCD (Buoyancy Control Device) has three primary functions: 1) to let you flot on the surface, 2) to allow you to adjust changes in your buoyancy underwater, and 3) to act as the harness that holds the entire scuba system together on you. Some BCDs incorporate your weight system. Some divers prefer the air bladder to be completely at their backs as is the case with back-mounted BCDs. This frees the areas around the diver's abdomen and under the arms, but tends to push the diver into a face-down position when the bladder is inflated on the surface. Advanced design jacket BCDs distribute the buoyancy around the hips for more balance, especially on the surface. Many BCDs include pockets to hold the diver's weight. This eliminates the need to wear a weight belt and the pockets are designed with a quick-release in order to drop the weight in an emergency. Low pressure or power inflation systems are standard on all modern BCDs while some inflator systems also incorporate the alternate air source with the low pressure inflator unit.
