Today almost all mask skirts are made from clear or colored silicone rubber which lasts much longer than the old neoprene rubber skirts. Clear silicone allows some visual perception objects on your sides. Black or colored silicone reduces stray light which helps in lower visibility or on night dives. For safety, the faceplate is tempered glass. Low-profile masks have a notched faceplate and a nose pocket that allows the diver's nose to protrude past the lens plane. Wraparound masks feature two additional panes of glass on the sides to improve peripheral vision. The higher internal volume on this type of masks means that the diver must exhale more to equalize the pressure or to clear the mask of water when flooded.
